John Pledger and Douglas Bramwell with Jones & Carter Inc. reaffirmed their commitment to the next generation of engineering students with the gift of an additional $20,000 toward the Jones & Carter, Inc. – Pledger Kalkomey, Inc. Engineering Scholarship at Blinn College.
Established in 2008, the scholarship promotes academic excellence, character and leadership development in the field of engineering. It is awarded annually to a student interested in pursuing a career in engineering.
The support for engineering education comes at a time when engineers are in high demand. According to a national survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers this year, the average starting annual salary for engineering graduates rose 2.3 percent to over $62,000.
Jones & Carter, Inc. is a 35-year-old, full-service civil and electrical engineering, planning, surveying and general consulting firm that serves both the public and private sectors. The company is listed as an “Engineering News-Record” top 500 national firm.
The Texas firm was established in 1976 and now has more than 350 employees with offices in Austin, Brenham, Bryan/College Station, Greenspoint, Dallas, Houston, Rosenberg, San Antonio and The Woodlands.
Pledger Kalkomey, Inc. was established in 1979 and provided professional services throughout Texas until its acquisition by Jones & Carter, Inc. in May 2007. Pledger has remained with the company since the acquisition.
A graduate of Texas A&M University, Pledger earned his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering in 1974 and his Master of Engineering – Transportation in 1975. He has more than three decades of experience and expertise in a variety of civil engineering projects, with a particular emphasis in municipal, county and institutional public infrastructure.
“It is my sincere hope that through this gift we can help even more students obtain the technical and leadership skills they will need to develop the innovative ideas of the future,” Pledger said.
A former Blinn College student and a graduate of Texas A&M, Bramwell earned a civil engineering degree in 2003. He has obtained Professional Engineering and Registered Professional Land Surveyor licenses and is currently a shareholder in the company.
“Blinn College is going to be a crucial component to help increase the number of engineering graduates in Texas,” he said. “It is our intention to help Blinn create an environment to provide opportunities for aspiring engineering students.”
The gift was made to the Blinn Foundation, which supports programs and activities that enhance the quality of education for Blinn College students and expand the educational opportunities for the entire community. While raising funds is an important function, the Foundation also seeks to heighten community awareness of the mission and accomplishments of the College and to promote excellence in education.
“Through this additional gift, the Jones & Carter, Inc. – Pledger Kalkomey Inc. scholarship is helping to ensure that Blinn College students who are passionate about engineering will have the opportunity to develop the skills they need to find success in an industry with a very exciting future,” said Marvin Tate, Blinn’s associate director of Resource Development.
Since its inception in 2000, the Foundation has raised more than $13 million for Blinn College. Those funds have been used to help launch major construction projects across Blinn’s campuses, including the A.W. Hodde, Jr. Technical Education Center, the J. Hal and Allyne Machat Music Facility, the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex and the Bert and Mae Dean Wheeler Residence Hall.
An additional $1 million has been spent purchasing classroom equipment and supplies requested by Blinn faculty.
