Blinn appoints experienced executive and financial leader to Senior VP/CFO

Veteran administrator brings 30 years of public/private sector experience to the job

Kelli Shomaker The Blinn College Board of Trustees voted tonight to appoint longtime Texas A&M University administrator Kelli Shomaker to serve as chief financial officer (CFO) and senior vice president for finance and administrative services.

Shomaker fills a similar, albeit elevated, role to the post Dr. Van Miller held before departing Blinn in June. Blinn’s CFO position now includes the title of senior vice president, and the role encompasses management of seven departments, including: human resources; accounting; the business office; purchasing; facilities planning and construction; computing services and food services.

Shomaker, with almost 30 years of public and private sector experience, including 15 years at Texas A&M, rose through the ranks in her career from an auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in the early 1980s to associate vice president for operations at A&M.

“Kelli brings together the qualities of being current in her field, seasoned as a financial executive and skilled at communicating complex information to broad audiences,” said Dr. Harold Nolte, Blinn president. “She is precisely the type of individual we need to continue modernizing and improving our College in this new and expanded role.”

The national search for Blinn’s CFO/Senior VP culminated in on-campus interviews and opportunities for faculty and staff to meet the finalist. She begins her service to Blinn in late October.

“I’m very excited to be a part of what’s happening,” Shomaker said. “The College is in excellent shape financially, but I’m eager to further solidify that position and expand into other funding opportunities.”

In her most recent role as associate vice president for operations at Texas A&M, Shomaker managed a budget of $426 million for Academic Affairs within the Office of the Provost. She prepared documents and updates for the provost and the A&M Board of Regents while managing the fiscal and administrative issues of Texas A&M University’s campus in Qatar.

Shomaker previously served as assistant dean for finance and administration, director of external reporting, director of accounting services for business affairs, director of the Fellows Program and as a faculty lecturer in the accounting department.

Before joining A&M, she was corporate treasurer for the private Mobley Group, director of the Security Trust & Financial Company and a vice president for the publicly held U.S. Global Investors, Inc. in San Antonio, Texas. She began her career in the financial sector as an auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, in Dallas, Texas.

Shomaker’s civic involvement extends to currently serving as treasurer for the Friends of the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra Association, past leadership roles on the Junior League Board of Bryan-College Station and the American Cancer Society of the Brazos Valley and various advising roles for Greek societies at Texas A&M.

She completed the New York City marathon in 2003, an achievement she cites as one of her most personally satisfying accomplishments.

Shomaker earned her bachelor of business administration in accounting at the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University in 1984 and is a registered CPA in the State of Texas.

About the search: Blinn’s CFO/Senior VP for Finance and Administrative Services search committee was chaired by Cathy Boeker, executive administrator for external affairs, and composed of representatives from the faculty, staff, administration and the Blinn Board of Trustees. The committee began formally evaluating candidates in August.
