Family-friendly musical comedy based on best-selling books
The Church Basement Ladies are coming back to Brenham.
Blinn College will host “Away in the Basement: A Church Basement Ladies Christmas” at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 and 5 at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center. Tickets go on sale today, and both shows are expected to sell out quickly.
The musical comedy is the third Church Basement Ladies production, following the original “Church Basement Ladies,” which was performed at the O’Donnell Center in 2010, and “Church Basement Ladies 2: A Second Helping.” All three installments are inspired by the best-selling books by Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson.
“Away in the Basement” takes the audience back to 1959 and the day of the Sunday school Christmas program. In the midst of holiday preparations, the ladies are creating their own memories from Christmases past and present. Content to do things the way they have always been done—even as they ponder new ideas—the reality of everyday life hits home. As they mend old costumes, put the finishing touches on the nativity pieces and discuss the politics of who will play the various roles, little do the ladies know what surprises are in store for them.
The original production opened in September 2005 at the Plymouth Playhouse in Minnesota and performed to 250,000 patrons during its 2 ½-year run. The show toured in 58 cities across the nation in 2007 and reached 51 cities in 2008. Its sequel, “A Second Helping,” opened in March 2008 and ran for 18 months.
Tickets are on sale for $25. To reserve tickets, call the O’Donnell Center box office at 979-830-4024. For a list of upcoming shows, visit: http://www.blinn.edu/odonnell/index.htm.
