Childers the first Blinn representative named to TCCTA executive committee
Professor Essie Childers became the first Blinn College representative ever named to the executive committee of the Texas Community College Teachers Association (TCCTA) recently when she was elected treasurer at the organization’s annual convention in Frisco, Texas.
Childers, a parallel studies professor who has been a member of the Blinn-Bryan faculty senate since 2007, will begin her one-year term next month.
"I'm very excited," Childers said. "I'm honored and excited to serve TCCTA and represent Blinn in this capacity."
In addition to her role on the Blinn faculty senate, Childers has served on the TCCTA's professional development committee since 2006, including the past year as chairperson.
She is board member for the TCCTA Foundation for Professional Excellence in the Community College and was the facilitator for the Great Ideas for Teaching Students (GIFTS) session at the recent conference.
"I believe it’s important to be active rather than a spectator," Childers said. "If you love teaching, if you love students, if you’re a proponent for student success, then it’s important to get involved to see what you can do in your classroom, in your college, in your community and for students in the state of Texas."
Childers ran for treasurer on a platform of working with teachers, legislators and community leaders in seeking strategies to reduce the need for remedial training for incoming college freshmen.
Comprised of educators from every teaching discipline, as well as counselors, librarians, and administrators, the 6,000-member TCCTA is the largest organization of postsecondary educators in Texas.
