Blinn-Schulenburg celebrates first class of Certified Medication Aides

Four students in Schulenburg’s certified medication aide program were recognized in a ceremony Thursday morning for their completion of the 140-hour Blinn College course. This was the first time Blinn College Workforce Education offered such a program on its campus in Schulenburg.

The certified medication aide program, a state and federally regulated training and certification program, prepares Certified Nurse Aides to administer medications in a long-term care setting. Students receive instruction and training in the preparation and administration of medications; observe, report, and document resident’s status; review principles of safety; and demonstrate knowledge of measurement systems, body systems, and common diseases.

Students must already be a registered CNA, working in a long-term care facility and have a high school diploma or GED, before applying to the program.

The participants and their home towns are: Dawn Houston, Monica Oranday-Thomas, and Misty Schindler of Schulenburg; and Nancy Watley of Mexia. Schulenburg’s Cindy Kalina, a registered nurse, taught the class. The class began in June 2 and was taught Monday through Thursday mornings until Aug. 5.

The certified medication aide program will not be offered again until the spring 2011 semester. In the meantime, Blinn Schulenburg will be adding another new heath program for the fall semester. The basic medical office assistant program is a 48-hour course designed to prepare students for work as a medical office assistant in physicians and other health practitioner’s offices. Medical office assistants perform administrative tasks to keep the office running smoothly.
Classes for the medical office assistant program begin Sept. 13 and registration is open now.
