Lady Bucs advance at national tournament

The Blinn College softball team advanced to the second round at the NJCAA Division 1 Fast Pitch National Championship tournament by squeaking out a 5-4 victory over North Central Texas College. The fourth-seeded Lady Bucs will play at 9 p.m. (CDT) tonight against Florida Community College.

Blinn’s Missy Siegel opened the scoring with a solo homer in the third, but the Lady Lions answered in the fourth. Blinn quickly retook the lead 2-1 with an RBI from Caley Jeter in the bottom of the inning.

North Central Texas took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the sixth. Then Jeter brought in two runs to take the game into the final inning tied 4-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, it was a freshman pinch hitter with a .091 batting average who won it for the Lady Bucs. Valarie Colunga lined a drive down the third line to score Lindsey Brown to end the game. Brown (20-3) got the win coming in in relief of Carlee Winkelmann.

“That is a huge win,” Blinn coach Rick Church said. “We probably didn’t have a comfortable moment the entire game.”

Blinn (54-9) has won 21 of its last 22 games. This is the Lady Bucs third trip to the national tournament in six years.
