Blinn Bucs ranked No. 5 entering 2009 season

The NJCAA/JCFootball.com preseason poll released today has the Blinn College Buccaneers at No. 5 to start the 2009 football season with two players on the preseason All-American list. Wide receiver Dexter Ransom (6-4, 210, Seguin) was named to the NJCAA Preseason All-American First Team Offense and defensive lineman Jonathan Mathis (6-2, 284, Spring Westfield) to the Second Team Defense. In 2008, Blinn won the Southwest Junior College Football Conference, finished the season with a 9-3 record and ranked 11th nationally.

Head coach Brad Franchione always says it is better to be highly ranked at the end of the season rather than the beginning, but with the star power on this year’s team, he realizes the Bucs will get a great deal of attention.

“My reaction is just to work harder and handle the details that we can take care of,” Franchione said. “We have some tremendously talented players who have to learn how to hold each other accountable and work together to find their role in the program.”

Cameron Newton (6-6, 244, Atlanta Westlake, GA/University of Florida) will help fill the vacancy left by All-American Terrance Cain who is vying for the starting quarterback position at the University of Utah. Newton is a dual threat QB who, along with returner Shawn Rutherford (5-11, 186, Bay City), gives Blinn a multitude of options on offense. Newton transferred from the University of Florida after a year of backing up Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and a semester on the redshirt roster. Ransom, running backs Michael Hayes (5-9, 195, East Bernard), and newcomer Hasan Lipscomb (5-10, 188, Cypress Fairbanks), who had been the top recruit at the University of Minnesota, will benefit from an offensive line that averages 6-4 ½ and 298 pounds.

“We have some players who could come together to make this the best o-line we’ve had in my time at Blinn,” Franchione said.

Defensively, Justin Goodman (5-10, 185, Alief Hastings) leads an experienced secondary with Mathis and Dextrell Simmons (5-11, 215, Spring Westfield) as the appointed leaders of the linebacker corps. After losing four players to Division I schools, the Bucs have no returning starters on the defensive line, yet they expect exceptional performances from the sophomores with freshmen providing depth. On the edge, the Bucs will be lead by Anthony Gonzales (6-4 ½, 250, Copperas Cove), one of the top defensive ends in the country.

Again this fall, the Bucs will open playing the reigning national champion Butler Community College. In the opening game of 2008, the Bucs upset the Grizzlies in Kansas 23-20 and held the No. 1 spot in the NJCAA poll for three weeks. Butler went on to win a second consecutive national championship. This year, the Bucs get Butler on their home turf at Spencer Stadium on Aug. 29.

The 2009 schedule has Blinn with five home games against Butler, Southeast Prep, Kilgore College, Trinity Valley Community College, and the homecoming game on Oct. 24 against Cisco Junior College. The Kilgore game is tentatively scheduled to be played at Viking Stadium at Bryan High School.
