Blinn ranked #1 in national volleyball poll
The defending national champion Blinn College Buccaneers will start the 2009 volleyball season ranked No. 1 in the country. Blinn tops the NJCAA preseason poll released today.
The Buccaneers return four starters from the title team including outside hitters Cinthya Roberto, an NJCAA Division I First Team All-American, and Elizaveta Senenkova, a First Team All-Region selection and the MVP of the regional tournament.
Blinn opens the season on the road Aug. 28-29 at the Texas Tornadoes Tournament in Houston. Following a trip to Beeville to play Coastal Bend College, the Buccaneers will host their annual Labor Day Classic Sept. 4-5. Tournament teams will include San Jacinto, Laredo, Hillsborough (FL), Missouri State-West Plains, Redlands (OK), Pasco Hernando (FL), and Eastern Arizona.
The Bucs went 33-2 and earned the national championship in 2008 with a victory over the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. It was Blinn’s sixth consecutive trip to the national tournament. Setter Kayla Schmidt was honored as National Player of the Year. Schmidt now plays for the University of Alabama.
Head coach David Rehr, the National Junior College Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 2008, is joined by a former player as his new assistant. Renee Johnson earned All-American honors as an outside hitter for Blinn (2004, 2005) before finishing her playing career at the University of Georgia.
