Blinn College commencement set for May 8 in Brenham
The 125th commencement for Blinn College will be held May 8 at 8 p.m. at Spencer Stadium on the college’s Brenham campus.
The keynote speaker will be Seth Christensen, this year’s Texas Junior College Student Government Association Student of the year and a member of the 2008 graduating class.
The 2006 Brenham High School graduate served as the Brenham campus Student Government Association president for 2007-2008 and was also named Region 4 Student of the Year. He has also served as historian for the association.
His interest in government led to an internship in Washington, D.C., with Congressman Michael McCaul. He also co-founded and co-chaired the United States Constitutional Scholarship Society.
He is a member of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Academic Honor Society. During his two years at Blinn, he was drum major for the Buccaneer Marching Band. He also participates as an actor with the community-based Unity Theatre in Brenham.
Christensen holds a real estate license and works with a local realty firm having started as an administrative assistant while in high school.
He is the son of William “Boo” and Gari Beth Christensen and has one sister, Breck. After receiving his associate of arts degree tonight, he plans to transfer to Texas A&M University and major in political science.
Christensen will be introduced during the program by Natalie Buro of Brenham, the president of the Sigma Kappa Delta English honor society. Other students on the program are Rachel Ver of Sealy, a Bryan campus graduate and member of the Alpha Phi Lambda chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, who will deliver the invocation; Alexandra Rogers of College Station, a Bryan campus graduate and member of the American Dental Hygienist Organization, who will lead the Pledge of Allegiance; and Melissa Glass of La Grange, a Schulenburg campus student, who will give the benediction.
College faculty and staff on the program include Jennifer Wise, director of choral studies, who will sing the National Anthem; college president Dr. Donald E. Voelter, who will introduce college officials and also present faculty awards; Atwood Kenjura, vice president of the college’s board of trustees, who will recognize retiring faculty; and executive vice president John Barkman, who will recognize newly endowed scholarships established at the college.
Certification of the graduates will be by Dr. John Harris, vice president of student services. Graduates will receive two-year associate in arts, associate in science and associate in applied science degrees and various one-year certificates, and they will be announced by college registrar Dr. Dennis Crowson.
Music for commencement will be presented by the Blinn College Band under the direction of Larry Campbell.
Commencement is held every May on the Brenham campus. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremonies will be moved to the Brenham High School auditorium.
Prior to the ceremonies, a reception will be held for the graduates and their families and friends in the campus student center beginning at 6 p.m.
