Two Lady Bucs receive post-season honors
Blinn College sophomore Tamara Vaughn was named to the Region
14 All-Region basketball team and the Region 14 All-Conference
team, while her teammate Sha'Tonya Mays received honorable mention
all-conference honors, head coach Jeff Jenkins has announced.
Vaughn, a 5-8 guard out of Houston Dobie who transferred to Blinn from UT Arlington,
was second on the team in scoring with 298 points, and had a field goal percentage
of 39.4 (111/282). She had a 30.4 three-point percentage (35/115) and a 75.9
free throw percentage (41/54). Her conference stats were: points, 197; field
goal percentage, 43.1 (72/167); three-point percentage, 37.3 (31/83); and free
throw percentage, 78.6 (22/28).
She scored in double figures in 14 of the Lady Bucs' 33 games this season.
Her high game was 24 points.
She had a total of 137 rebounds (89 in conference), 67 assists (35) and 42
steals (28).
Mays, a 5-5 freshman point guard from Leggett, led the team in scoring with
337. She had a 29.8 field goal percentage (104/349) on the season but was stronger
in conference play with a 31.9 percentage (65/204). She had a 27.7 three-point
percentage (77/278) for the season, 29.6 (50/169) in conference. In free throws
she was 78.8 (52/66) on the season, 78.6 (33/42) in conference play.
Seventeen times she scored in double figures and four times reached a high
of 18 points.
She had a total of 67 total rebounds (35 in conference), 62 assists (40); and
17 steals (10).
The Lady Bucs tied the school record for wins with their 24-9 record. The team
went 24-10 in 1989 and advanced to the national tournament under head coach
Wayne Williams.
This year the team finished as region runners-up to Trinity Valley, the first
times since Williams' team did it in 1991.
