Blinn College Granted AmeriCorps Position
The Blinn College service learning program is the recipient of
a Texas Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA grant, which provides for
an assistant to help further develop the program.
Blinn’s service learning program integrates community involvement
with college course work in a wide range of disciplines. The Texas
Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Texas Legislature promote
the service-learning concept to engage students to be involved
in the community and enhance their learning experience. Effective
service-learning programs improve academic grades, increase class
attendance, and develop personal and social responsibility.
Blinn’s VISTA assistant during a one-year appointment will
help disseminate service-learning information, produce educational
material for faculty and student leaders, encourage new initiatives,
and assist in developing a long-term assessment plan.
The Corporation for National and Community Service established
AmeriCorps*VISTA 40 years ago to place workers in nonprofit organizations
and public agencies to improve communities.
