About the Herbarium
The Blinn College Herbarium is dedicated to the late Jesse Lee Wied who was a member of the Blinn science faculty from 1967 until his retirement in 1998. Among his many accomplishments in the classroom and with his students was his tireless efforts to gather an extensive collection of plant specimens. Collecting many of the samples himself, with the assistance of his wife of 43 years, Polly, he also incorporated the endeavor into his students’ classroom experience. Mr. Wied was born in Ellinger, graduated from high school in Fayetteville and earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture education in 1961 and his master’s degree in plant science in 1965 from Texas A&M University. Prior to receiving his master’s degree, he taught agriculture at Fayetteville Rural High School before becoming a botany and plant taxonomy instructor at Blinn. He also raised Hereford cattle. Jesse Lee Wied passed away Nov. 21, 2004. His family includes his wife, Polly; a son Jesse Jr. and his wife, Laura; two daughters, Janice Pritchard and her husband Rex; and Joyce Dickschat and her husband, Brian; and seven grandchildren.
