The Six Kingdoms of Living Organisms

Below are listed the six kingdoms of living organisms with a brief description of each of the kingdoms and a representative picture.

To go through a dichotomous key to help identify specific orgainisms within each of these kingdoms click on the representative picture.

Kingdom Brief Description Picture
Animal  Multicellular organisms that ingest food from an outside source, flexible cells  lacking a stiff cell wall, cells arranged into units called tissue, usually mobile.
Plant An organism capable of producing it’s own food; cells containing chlorophylls a  and b, cells possess stiff cell walls, mainly sessile.
Fungi Heterotrophic (deriving food from an outside source) organisms, filamentous, with  chitin rich cells. Natural decomposers.
Protista Single celled organisms that possess a membrane-enfolded nucleus (eukaryotes).
Monera: Single celled organisms lacking
                            a membrane-enfolded nucleus. Eubacteria:
Cell walls containing muramic acids, sometimes appearing in colonies.
Monera: Single celled organisms lacking
                            a membrane-enfolded nucleus.
Archaebacteria
Cell walls lacking muramic acids, capable of living in extreme regions.
