The most important thing to understand is that the letter and numbers assigned to books and journals correspond to their subject matter.

179.3 (179 = philisophy, .3 = treatment of animals including ethcis of hunting, vegetarianism)

L659w (L659 = letter and number of author's last name, w = first letter of the first word of the title)
