Articles in Magazines, Journals, and Reference Books

Blinn College Library subscribes to several databases that you can use to search for periodical articles in allied health fields

CINAHL - Provides indexing and abstracts for over 1,700 current nursing and allied health journals and publications dating back to 1982, totaling over 920,000 records. Indexes the periodicals Journal of Practical Hygiene, Minority Nursing, and Newborn and Infant Nursing Reviews, available in print in the Bryan campus library.

Consumer Health Complete / Salud en Espanol - Designed to support patients' information needs and foster an overall understanding of health-related topics. This full text database includes articles from journals, newswires, and reference books as well as images, animations, and videos.

Health Reference Center Academic (Academically oriented) / Health and Wellness Resource Center (Consumer oriented) - Both of these databases index over 800 health periodicals, many full text reference books and pamphlets. Many articles are available full text. While there is a great deal of overlap in the content of these two databases, Health Reference Center Academic provides more advanced search capabilities, while Health and Wellness Resource Center provides a graphical, more intuitive interface.

Health Source - Nursing/Academic Edition - Provides full text of articles for nearly 550 scholarly journals and abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals. It also includes Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, which covers 1,300 generic drug patient education sheets with more than 4,700 brand names. Updated daily.

Health Source - Consumer Edition - provides access to nearly 80 full text, consumer health magazines, searchable full text for more than 1,000 health-related pamphlets, and more than 130 health reference books on topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Updated daily.

MedicLatina - A Spanish language collection of medical research and investigative journals published by renowned Latin American medical publishers. This unique database provides access to full text for nearly 100 peer-reviewed medical journals

Medline - Provides indexing and abstracting for over 4,600 current biomedical journals. Provides the full text from over 350 journals. Includes journals from the U.S. and 70 foreign countries.

MedlinePlus - Contains pages of carefully selected links to Web resources with authoritative health information, including dictionaries, directories, organizations, news sources and 650 health topics. It also contains links to pre-formulated searches of the MEDLINE/PubMed database, allowing you to find references to latest health professional articles on your topic.

Natural & Alternative Treatments - contains almost two hundred articles on medical conditions, presenting in an evidence-based manner the alternative medicine therapies proposed for use in their treatment. It also contains detailed, evidence-based information on herbs and supplements, functional foods, and other alternative therapies such as acupuncture and homeopathy. The evidence-based content has been developed and reviewed by a team of physicians and pharmacologists with the goal of providing consumers with reliable information.

Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection - Provides nearly 575 full text publications, including nearly 550 peer-reviewed titles. Covers topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods.

Open Access Initiative Databases

The Open Access Initiative (OAI) is a new way for scholars to publish research findings. Since a great deal of research is subsidized by governments or institutions, scholars have been pushing for ways to publish that ensure free and unrestricted access to scholarly & research journals. The following two free databases index articles published in open access journals. The open access journals are generally not indexed in the library databases listed above, although MEDLINE does index some of them.

DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals and Open J-Gate

And a really special search engine...

Google Scholar - Use this version of Google to search the web for scholarly articles on your topic. The drawback is that if Google doesn't link you to full text, you will have to go through the steps mentioned below to see if full text is available through the Blinn College Library. Try the library's databases and open access journal databases first.

Finding Full Text for Article Citations

What if I have citation (or reference) information for an article, and I need to find the full text of the article?

Identify the title of the periodical (journal, magazine, or newspaper) that published the article, then search the databases below to see if that periodical is available through Blinn Library.

  • TDNet - See if one of the Blinn Library databases has full text for the periodical.

  • CINAHL - This allied health database is not covered in TDNet. Click on "Publications" in the blue menu bar at the top of the page to do a periodical title search.

  • EJS: Electronic Journal Service - See if Blinn Library has an online subscription for the periodical.

  • Blinn Library Catalog - See if Blinn Library subscribes to your periodical. In the Browse search box, choose "Journal Title" from the drop-down menu, and type in the periodical title.

  • Article Request Form - If the periodical you want is housed at a different campus than the one you attend, fill out this form. You'll usually get your article within 24 hours.

  • Interlibrary Loan - If Blinn Library doesn't have access to the journal you need, contact a librarian to ask about Interlibrary Loan.
