Pick your topic carefully! Critical information is not available on every literary work. It is best to do a preliminary search using some of the resources on this page before you submit your final topic selection to your instructor.

 

Literary Reference Books

Books within the following number ranges in the library's reference section can include a wide variety of useful information: plot summaries, character analyses, biographies, bibliographies, reprints of criticism, and encyclopedias on specific authors.

R 016.8 -- bibliographies listing citations to criticism in books or journal articles.

R 800 to R 809 -- literature from any country

R 810 to R 819 -- American literature

R 820 to R 829 -- British literature

Popular Reference Books in Literature lists many literary reference books that you may find helpful.

Library Catalog: Find Books

Search the Library Catalog to find books in the library's collection that analyze literary works. The catalog provides citations, location, and circulation information for all the print and audiovisual materials owned by the library.

  1. To search for criticism of an author’s works, select the “Subject” category in the Browse search window, and type in your author’s last name.

  2. Click on subject headings that start with your author's name and end with either "criticism and interpretation" or with the title of the work you are researching. You will see a list of books of criticism about your author and his work(s).

  3. Use the "Call Number" to retrieve books from your home campus library shelves.

  4. Click on the "Request" button to have books from another campus delivered to your campus.

  5. Click on the "Web Link" to access the full-text electronic books.

Databases: Find Books and Articles

The library subscribes to the following databases that provide citations, and often, full text documents from books and literary journals. If you need help getting started in these databases, click on "Step-by-Step Guide."

Literature Resource Center

Find full text biographical and critical essays from Contemporary Authors, Dictionary of Literary Biography, and many other literary reference resources in this combination of several Gale Group databases. Also included is Contemporary Literary Criticism, which provides full text reprints of critical essays that were originally published in literary journals and books.

MLA International Bibliography

This bibliography includes over 1.5 million citations to critical essays from more than 4,400 journals and 1,000 book publishers from all over the world. Some citations also provide links to the complete text of the document. Subjects covered include literature, language and linguistics, folklore, literary theory and criticism, and drama.

Project Muse

Muse offers full text articles from over 250 scholarly journals covering the fields of literature and criticism, folklore, and performing arts. Provided by Johns Hopkins University.

Internet Links

Literature Resources - A subject guide to literary Internet collections by period, genre, etc. Produced by MIT Libraries.

Modern American Poetry - Provides biographies and literary analysis. Produced by the Department of English, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
