A call number is a book's address on the shelf - that's how we keep them in order so you can find them. The subject of the book determines its call number, so you can browse the books in the following numbers relating to medicine.

Articles
in Magazines, Journals, and Newspapers |

Blinn College Library subscribes to several databases that you can use to search for periodical articles in allied health fields. CINAHL with Full Text
- Try this first! Because the focus of CINAHL is on allied health journals, rather than medical journals in general, you are more likely to find articles from dentistry & dental hygiene journals. Don't let the title fool you, though - not all of the articles are full text in this database, although they claim to be the world's most comprehensive source of full text for nursing & allied health journals.
Consumer
Health Complete /
Salud en Espanol - This is designed to support patients' information
needs and foster an overall understanding of health-related topics.
This full text database covers topics such as aging, cancer, diabetes,
drugs & alcohol, fitness, nutrition & dietetics, children's
health, men & women's health, etc.
Health
Reference Center Academic (Academically oriented) / Health
and Wellness Resource Center (Consumer oriented) -
Both of these databases index over 800 health periodicals,
many full
text reference books and pamphlets.
Many articles are available full text. While there is a great
deal of overlap in the content of these two
databases, Health Reference Center Academic provides more advanced
search capabilities, while Health and Wellness Resource Center
provides a graphical, more intuitive interface.
Health Source - Nursing/Academic Edition -
This database provides nearly 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. It also features the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, which covers 1,300 generic drug patient education sheets with more than 4,700 brand names.
Health Source - Consumer Edition - A rich collection of consumer health information, providing information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Features searchable full text for nearly 150 journals.
MedicLatina
- A Spanish language collection of medical research and investigative
journals published by renowned Latin American medical publishers.
This unique database provides access to full text for nearly 100
peer-reviewed medical journals.
MEDLINE
-
provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE indexes citations from over 4,800 current biomedical journals. While MEDLINE does not have the full text of the articles, we access it through EBSCO, who provide s links to full text if an articles is availiable from another of our EBSCO databases.
Natural & Alternative Treatments - contains almost two hundred
articles on medical conditions, presenting in an evidence-based
manner the alternative medicine therapies proposed for use in
their treatment. It also contains detailed, evidence-based information
on herbs and supplements, functional foods, and other alternative
therapies such as acupuncture and homeopathy. The evidence-based
content has been developed and reviewed by a team of physicians
and pharmacologists with the goal of providing consumers with
reliable information.
Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection - Provides nearly 575
full text publications, including nearly 550 peer-reviewed titles.
Covers topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics,
psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and
observational and experimental methods.
Open Access Initiative Databases The Open Access Initiative (OAI) is a new way for scholars to publish research findings. Since a great deal of research is subsidized by governments or institutions, scholars have been pushing for ways to publish that ensure free and unrestricted access to scholarly & research journals. The following two free databases index articles published in open access journals. The open access journals are generally not indexed in the library databases listed above, although MEDLINE does index some of them. DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals and Open J-Gate
And a really special search engine... Google Scholar - Use this version of Google to search the web for scholarly articles on your topic. The drawback is that if Google doesn't link you to full text, you will have to go through the steps mentioned below to see if full text is available through the Blinn College Library. Try the library's databases and open access journal databases first.
