Locating Books in the Library
The Library
Catalog is used to search for all types of materials, including
books, that are owned by the library. The first step is to choose the
type of search (either Browse or Keyword). Next, perform the search.
If the books you find are located at the campus you attend, use the
call number to find it on the shelf. Items located in libraries at other
Blinn College campuses may be ordered by clicking on the item's "Request"
button. Materials from other Blinn College libraries are generally delivered
to your home campus library within 24 hours.
Searching

Using Periodical Indexes to Locate
Journal, Magazine and Newspaper Articles
Thousands of articles containing information relevant to the allied health fields can be accessed using the library’s subscription databases. Choose Databases under the Find It menu, and select Databases by Category to access the Nursing, Medicine, and Health databases.
When searching these indexes, you will encounter many articles that
are available “full text.” The content of these articles
is exactly the same as what you would find in the print version of the
publication; only the format is different. For some articles only a
citation will be available, and it will take a few more steps to locate
these articles in the print publication.
Recommended
Library Databases for Allied Health Research:
| CINAHL
Provides indexing and abstracts for
over 1,700 current nursing and allied health journals and
publications dating back to 1982, totaling over 920,000 records.
Indexes the periodicals Journal of Practical Hygiene, Minority
Nursing, and Newborn and Infant Nursing Reviews, available
in print in the Bryan campus library.
|
| Health
Reference Center Academic (Academically oriented) /
Health
and Wellness Resource Center (Consumer oriented)
Both of these databases index over 800
health periodicals, many full text reference books and pamphlets.
Many articles are available full text. While there is a great
deal of overlap in the content of these two
databases, Health Reference Center Academic provides more
advanced search capabilities, while Health and
Wellness Resource Center provides a graphical, more intuitive
interface.
|
Health Source - Nursing/Academic Edition
Provides full text of articles for nearly 550 scholarly journals focusing on many medical disciplines. It also features abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals and is updated daily.
|
| Medline
Provides indexing and abstracting for
over 4,600 current biomedical journals. Provides the full
text from over
350 journals. Includes journals from the U.S. and 70 foreign
countries.

Finding
the Full Text of Your Article
If a full text link is not available for an article cited in your search results, search in EJS (using your article citation information) or in TDNet (using the title of the periodical that your article appeared in) to see if the full text is available from an e-journal subscription or from a different library database.
To see if we subscribe to the printed version of a periodical, search the library catalog. Use the browse search and select “journal title” from the search type menu.
If the periodical you need is at your home campus library, you can retrieve and photocopy the article yourself. If the periodical is available only at another Blinn College campus library, complete an article request form in the library (or the online article request form) to have a copy of the article sent to your home campus. If you need assistance, please ask a librarian.
If the library does not have print or electronic access to the full text, ask a librarian for help.
