Lesson Instruction Session - Lesson Options - Bryan


The librarians at the Blinn College Library are available for library instruction. We can teach students about library materials and resources that are available to them, as well as research skills.


Submitting this form only sends your request preferences to a library staff member. Your request will be reviewed and you will be contacted within 24-72 hours to verify that your session has been scheduled. Please allow at least one week for scheduling. • Instructors are required to accompany the class.

• If an instructor has a copy of the assignment the students are working on, please give it to the librarian assigned to the class.

Librarians will assess the instruction sessions with an assignment, short quiz, or game.

GETTING STARTED


Note: Times indicated include hands-on computer time for students.

Library Tour (15 - 20 minutes)
Walking tour of the library with a brief introduction to resources and services.

Navigating the Library Website (10 minutes)
Students will learn how to access the library website and locate available online resources and services.

Choosing a Topic (10 - 15 minutes)
Students will learn how to search online and print resources for topic selection.

Devising a Strategy (15 minutes)
Students will learn how to identify keywords and combine terms to devise a strategy for their assignment.

Defining and Developing a Topic (15 minutes)
Students will learn to use print and online subject encyclopedias to gain a better understanding of their topics.

Preassignment for English 1301
An assignment that students complete in advance of library instruction.

Preassignment for English 1302
A literature assignment that students complete in advance of library instruction.



 

CORE CONTENT


Note: Times indicated include hands-on computer time for students.

English 1301 Session - 50 minute session
50 minute classes include keyword search strategy basics for finding books and periodical articles. Students will learn the steps in the research process including how to define a topic, devise a search strategy, and search for books and periodical articles using the library’s databases.

English 1301 Session - 75 minute session
75 minute classes include finding background information and keywords, keyword search strategies, and searching for books and periodical articles. Students will learn the steps in the research process including how to define a topic, devise a search strategy, and search for books and periodical articles using the library’s databases.

 

Librarians highly recommend that students complete the following before arriving to the session:

1. Choose a research topic

2. Library Preassignment

3. Starting Smart, Finding Articles, or Using the Web.

 

English 1302 Session - 50 minute session
Students will learn how to find literary criticism in print and online resources. 50 minute classes include literary criticism keyword search strategy basics, and searching for books and periodical articles.

English 1302 Session - 75 minute session
Students will learn how to find literary criticism in print and online resources. 75 minute classes include finding background information and keywords for literary criticism, keyword search strategies, and searching for books and periodical articles.

Finding books and other resources in the library catalog (25 minutes)
Students will learn advanced library catalog searching techniques.

General Research Databases (25 minutes)
Students will learn to find information in general periodical databases including e-Library, InfoTrac Newspapers, Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, OED Online and SIRS Researcher.

Effective Web Searching/Evaluating Websites (25 minutes)
Students will learn advanced web searching techniques and the criteria for evaluating websites.

Specialized Research Databases (25 minutes)
Students will learn to find information specific to a discipline, such as Nursing, science, history, literature, business, music etc.

SPECIALIZED MODULES

 

Distinguishing between popular and scholarly journals (10 minutes)
Students will learn the differences between popular and scholarly journals and how to find and identify samples of each.

Accessing articles through microfiche, microfilm, and bound periodical volumes (10 minutes).
Students will learn how to find articles that are archived on microfiche/microfilm and that are not available online.
