Periodical Holdings List

These are the actual paper copies of magazines and journals. They may arrive weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc., depending on the publication schedule of each title.  The most recent issues, especially the current year, are usually in the current periodicals sections of the libraries.  Issues are kept in the current periodicals sections until they are bound, replaced by MICROFICHE, or displaced by newer issues.

Where:
BRENHAM: Along the wall on the north end of the Reading Room
BRYAN: In plastic bins on shelves near the index tables along the northwest windows
SCHULENBURG: Newest issues are on display racks on the back wall; older issues are behind clerk’s desk.

Bound periodicals are the actual paper issues of magazines or journals grouped together in book-like volumes with hard covers. The title and the volume number and date are printed on the spine of the bound volume.  Issues are sometimes unavailable because they have been sent-the bindery-be bound. Check with the library staff for issues you cannot locate.

Where:
All bound holdings are in the Brenham library, on the north side of the Stacks area just behind the Xerox and microfilm copiers.

Photographs of periodicals and newspapers, reduced in size and printed on rolls (reels) of film. The entire issue is photographed, and all pages, illustrations, etc. are included.  Articles from microfilm are cited the same way as paper issues in footnotes and “works cited.” Microfilm is wound on a spool and placed in individual boxes which are filed in special filing cabinets.  The film is viewed and copied using special machines called readers and reader/printers.

BRENHAM: Gray cabinets in the microfilm viewing area of the Stacks.
BRYAN: Gray cabinets in the copier room

Essentially the same as microfilm, but printed on 4x6 sheets of microfilm instead of long rolls.  Fiche must be viewed on readers and can be copied with reader/printers.  Groups of fiche are kept in envelopes and filed in special cabinets.

BRENHAM: In black cabinets in the microfilm viewing area.
BRYAN: In black cabinets in the copier room.

Periodical articles are available electronically through any internet enabled computer. Special citation procedures must be used-cite these articles in footnotes and “works cited.” See yellow handout.
