Atlases and Maps


Atlapedia Online Full color physical and political maps as well as key facts and statistics on countries of the world. Select "Countries A to Z" for figures and statistical data on geography, climate, people, religion, language, history, and economy for each country. The World Maps section provides full color physical and political maps for regions of the world.


Bing Maps (was MSN Maps) A program for creating maps, e-mailing or downloading them. Provides driving directions and distances.


Census Atlas of the United States is the first comprehensive atlas of population and housing produced by the Census Bureau since the 1920s. The Census Atlas is a large-format publication about 300 pages long (in Adobe Acrobat PDF format) and containing almost 800 maps. Data from censuses prior to 2000 support nearly 150 maps and figures, providing context and an historical perspective for many of the topics presented. Topics include: Population, Migration, Race, Age and Sex, Ancestry, Education, Income and Poverty, Housing, and Military Service.


Earth Observatory The purpose of NASA's Earth Observatory is to provide a freely-accessible publication on the Internet where the public can obtain new satellite imagery and scientific information about our home planet. The focus is on Earth's climate and environmental change.


Google Maps This user-friendly mapping technology includes business locations, contact information, and driving directions to anyone searching for results in the United States, Canada, and the UK (beta version).


MapQuest This user-friendly mapping technology includes business locations, contact information, and driving directions to anyone searching for results in the United States, Canada, and other countries throughout the world.


MLA Language Map The interactive Language Map from the Modern Language Association uses data from the 2000 United States census to display the locations and numbers of speakers of thirty languages and three groups of less commonly spoken languages in the United States.


Microsoft Research Maps (MRA) (was TerraServer) Provides detailed satellite imagery and aerial photography of locations within the United States and special international cities and landmarks.


National Atlas of the United States Interactive layered maps of the United States providing sections on: elevation and terrain, exotic species maps, animated vegetation growth and interactive maps within your browser. Map layers can be downloaded from the USGS free via FTP. Maps have zoom function that allows users to closely examine over 2 million entries.


National Geographic.com Maps and Geography An interactive map site that features maps, flags, and profiles for the countries of the world and the U.S. states. Also provides many educational resources and maps of Mars and space.


Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection Provides digital images of hundreds of current interest and historical maps from the library (located at University of Texas at Austin). Also includes links to numerous other digital map collections.


SIRS Knowledge Source Select the “Database Features” tab to access country profiles and maps of the world. A Blinn College Library subscription service.


Texas Historic Sites Atlas The Texas Historical Commission provides this interactive atlas featuring more than 200,000 historic site records, including data on Texas Historical Markers and National Register of Historic Places properties in Texas


The Theban Mapping Project The Theban Mapping Project strives to conserve the archaeological sites in the Thebes valley (in Egypt) by developing detailed maps and databases of every archaeological, geological, and ethnographic feature. At this website, you can read articles, use its comprehensive glossary, bibliography, and timeline, or browse the images and maps available online.


U.S. Gazetteer Files - U.S. Census Bureau Download raw gazetteer data files from 1990, 2000, 2010, 2012, and 2013 by counties, county subdivisions (minor civil divisions/census county divisions), places, census tracts, congressional districts, American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Areas, school districts (elementary, secondary, and unified), state legislative districts (upper and lower), ZIP Code tabulation areas (ZCTAs), and urban areas for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

Yale University Map Collection One of the largest university collections in the United States,Yale's collections are geographically comprehensive and include over 200,000 maps and approximately 15,000 rare (pre-1850) sheet maps. The website does not include all of the library's maps but does include a good selection from its Antiquarian and Historical City maps.



If you are in the library, the 900’s call number range of the reference section contains historical and other special topic atlases. Bryan and Brenham campus libraries also place most large atlases in atlas stands designed to make it easier to access and use them.
