| The Learning Center provides
FREE tutoring for ALL Blinn students in a variety of subjects
including Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Programming,
Mathematics, Microsoft Office Applications, Physics,
and Foreign Languages.
What is tutoring? When a student has a question or is stuck on a problem, a tutor can help guide the student (tutee) through the reasoning and resources to find the solution. A tutor does not re-teach the material or review the subject material.
What do I bring to tutoring? The student must bring the course textbook, classnotes, and any other course resources to tutoring sessions. The student is responsible for reviewing the material and working the problem on his/her own before coming in for tutoring. A student who is prepared and has a good attitude will get the most out of a tutoring session.
What types of tutoring are available at the Learning Center? Drop-in tutoring (no appointment), group tutoring (appointment preferred), and individual tutoring (appointment required). See descriptions of each below.
Drop-in tutoring (DIT): Drop-in at the Learning Center for tutoring. No appointment is necessary, but tutoring is based upon availability and is first-come, first-served. See the tutoring schedule for subject and tutor availability. [Drop-in tutoring is NOT offered during MiniMesters]
Group tutoring sessions (GTS): An LC tutor will have a 1 hour session, once a week, with 10 students per session in specific courses. Group tutoring provides a mechanism for students to meet their classmates, to learn to work with each other and a tutor, and encourages students to form their own study groups for other classes. This is NOT a supplemental instruction session or a review session. See the tutoring schedule for GTS subjects and times. Please call or drop by the LC to sign-up for a session. [Group tutoring sessions are NOT offered during MiniMesters or Summer Sessions.]
Individual tutoring by appointment (TBA): An LC tutor will meet with a student one-on-one for a 30 minute session. Please call or drop by the LC to make an appointment. [Tutoring by appointment is NOT offered during MiniMesters]
Who are the tutors and what are their qualifications? Our tutoring services are performed by Peer
Tutors (Blinn students), Senior
Peer Tutors and Learning
Center Assistants. All peer tutors have completed the
courses in which they tutor and have been recommended by an
instructor. Senior peer tutors have successfully completed
upper level courses in their tutoring area. All Learning Center
Assistants hold Bachelor's Degrees and some have also earned graduate degrees. In addition, they have work or teaching experience in the areas
in which they tutor.
