Tutoring

Tutoring is an invaluable method of learning that provides the opportunity for a student to explore all aspects of the writing process in a stress-free environment. It allows the student to attain a better understanding of principles learned in the classroom, or it can help him or her to grasp rules and fundamentals that he or she might be having difficulty with. Here are just a few of the areas that might be covered in a typical tutoring session:

  • Different types of writing assignments;
  • The writing process;
  • Paragraph organization, content, and development;
  • Essay organization, content, and development;
  • Topic sentences and thesis statements;
  • Library research;
  • Grammar and punctuation;
  • Internal parenthetical documentation and works cited pages;
  • MLA format;
  • Revision; and
  • The use of reference books on writing, including The Little, Brown Handbook.

A tutoring session is a place for students to engage in individualized, active learning about their own writing.  As a result, writing consultants do not write on students’ papers.  Instead, these consultants ask students to read their papers aloud and both ask and answer questions about these papers.  By engaging students in conversation about their papers, writing consultants help students to not only recognize but also understand and improve potential weaknesses (and strengths!) in their writing.

The Writing Room has expanded its capacity for one-on-one tutoring of students and now offers students increased hours and flexible times that they can choose from when seeking assistance. Tutoring hours for the 2009 spring semester are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On Sundays, tutoring is also available in The Writing Room during its normal hours of operation. Although walk-ins are welcome, in order to guarantee service, students are encouraged to visit The Writing Room (Rm. 14) or call (979) 830.4403 and schedule an appointment in order to ensure availability. Scheduled appointments have priority over walk-in clients.

Online Tutoring

Currently, The Writing Room does not offer any resources for Online Tutoring; however, if a student is seeking online assistance, please click on the "Helpful Links" link in the upper left-hand corner of this page. That page contains a listing of several websites that do offer online tutorial assistance.
