Counseling Services
"Our Goal Is Your Success"
Blinn College's Counseling Services provides students with
a range of resources to assist them in formulating plans and
making decisions in various phases of their academic, personal,
and vocational development.
Academic Advisement
Blinn College encourages all students to participate in academic
advisement throughout their tenure here. The Academic Advisement
process includes meeting with a counselor or faculty advisor
to choose courses and make appropriate decisions concerning
students' academic goals. The following populations of students
are required to be advised each semester prior to registration:
- students enrolling at Blinn College for the first time*
- students who fail any part of the THEA test
- students who are on scholastic probation
The Counseling Services staff, as well as faculty advisors,
is available year round to guide students regarding prerequisites,
course transferability, career choices, and many other aspects
that concern student development.
* exception:
a. students co-enrolled at a senior institution which provides
appropriate approval, and
b. students who have passed all parts of THEA or are THEA
exempt. This group of students must sign a self-advising waiver
form.
Academic Course Planning Guide:
This site helps students research all the information needed to determine courses that will satisfy their academic goals. All students are encouraged to be advised for courses; however, new students to Blinn College and those who have not passed part(s) of the state test, are required to meet with an advisor prior to registration. Also, for those students who plan to transfer, it is strongly suggested they discuss their course options with an advisor at the four-year institution.

Academic Skills Development
Students who need assistance in becoming more effective academically
may meet with a counselor to discuss techniques for improving
their learning skills. Time management, ways to derail procrastination,
how to take lecture notes, dealing with test anxiety, and other
means of enhancing study habits are available through Counseling
Services.
Career and Vocational Counseling
Counselors assist students in exploring vocational goals, studying
occupational information, and evaluating career interests and
abilities. A comprehensive computer-based career program for
career decision making and a reference library of books and
printed materials on occupations, majors, colleges, and career
planning are available to students. Technical advisors are also
available to assist students in specific technical/vocational
certificate or degree programs. For information on majors and
career choices, use the links below.
DISCOVER is an interactive career-guidance system
and includes an assessment of interests, skills and values as
well as information on careers, schools and the job search.
Students must obtain a user ID token to log on to DISCOVER.
On the Bryan Campus, tokens may be obtained through the Center
for Student Development (S-157) or the Perkins
Grant Office (H-138). On the Brenham and Schulenburg campuses,
tokens may be obtained through the counseling office.
Job Listings
Counseling Services has a new online job posting system for
students and graduates to download a resume and search available
job listings.
Employers can access the system to post job vacancies
and to search the available supply of students and graduates.
Blinn College has teamed with College Central Network (CCN)
to make this a powerful yet streamlined online job search
system. To access the new system, click on the link: www.collegecentral.com/blinncollege
Orientation
Orientation is a program designed to acquaint new students
with the campus and the various resources that can enhance
both
academic success and personal development. Orientation
sessions are offered on each campus several times during the summer
before
fall registration. Academic advisement is available following
the orientation sessions for students with official THEA scores
or THEA exemption scores.
Personal and Confidential Counseling
Counselors assist students in understanding themselves and
achieving their personal goals. Counseling sessions are
confidential, and no information is released without the student's
permission (to the limits provided by the law). Students
may see a counselor for a variety of personal reasons, including:
improving communication skills, increasing self-confidence,
relationship issues, substance abuse issues, and coping with
feelings of anxiety or depression. Individuals requiring
more comprehensive assistance are referred to local agencies
and/or specialists.
