Steve
Spurlin begins his 10th year at Blinn College and his 20th year
in college coaching. In his eight previous seasons at Blinn,
Spurlin’s teams have four times reached post-season play
in the tough Region 14 Athletic Conference.
Spurlin got his start
in college coaching as a student assistant coach following
his playing career at Texas A&I University
(now Texas A&M - Kingsville) from 1983-1985 where he was
a three-year letterman. He later became a full-time assistant
coach on the Javelina staff, remaining there until 1991. When
then head coach Jerry Hopkins took the head job at Sam Houston
State University in 1991, Coach Spurlin joined him. He remained
at Sam Houston until his arrival at Blinn in May 1998.
A native
of Victoria, Spurlin was an all-district basketball player
at Victoria High School, serving as team captain both
his junior and senior seasons. At the conclusion of his high
school career, he played one year at Laredo Junior College
before he transferred to Texas A&I. While at Texas A&I,
he served as captain on the 1983-84 and 1984-85 teams.
Spurlin
received his bachelor of science degree in health and physical
education from Texas A&I University in 1986 and
his master of science degree in school administration from
there in 1988.
He is married to the former Sharon Selzer of
Moulton, a certified public accountant. They have two sons:
Trevor Jeremiah (12)
and Terrence Braxton (9). His hobbies include spending
time with
his family, all sports activities and yard work.
Coach
Tra Arnold enters his fourth year as an assistant with the Blinn
College Buccaneer basketball program.
A native of Houston, Arnold
is a graduate of Clear Creek High School where he played for
Coach Buddy Carlisle. He then played
for the College of Southern Idaho, which was ranked as the
No. 1 junior college program in 2000-2001. He later played at
Biola
University in La Mirada, Calif.
Coach Arnold received an associate
in arts degree from College of Southern Idaho in 2002 and a
bachelor of science in kinesiology
from Biola in 2005. He’s completing a master of education
degree in physical education from Prairie View A&M University.
Coach
Arnold and the former Jodi Reber were married Aug. 6, 2005
His philosophy on his sport: “I am in coaching because
I love the game and love to help young men grow in life and in
basketball.”
