Bucs open season by beating No. 1 Butler
The Blinn Buccaneers upset the top-ranked and defending national champion Butler Grizzlies 23-20 in the “Battle of the Champions” to open the 2008 season. The Bucs’ victory came before a crowd of 15,000 in Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium.
The game featured the 2007 NJCAA national champion Grizzlies against the 2006 national champion Buccaneers with the two teams ranked first and second in the NJCAA pre-season poll.
Butler struck first on a 13-yard pass, but the Bucs dominated the second quarter. All-American quarterback Terrance Cain connected with Dexter Ransom for a 24-yard touchdown and Brad Hicks hit a 21-yard field goal to give Blinn a 10-7 lead.
Blinn was ahead 17-7 at the half holding the Grizzlies to just 89 yards of offense. In the third quarter, Butler caught a few breaks. One play after Cain threw an interception, the Grizzlies capitalized on a 92-yard touchdown pass. Then a 20-yard passing touchdown put Butler up 20-17.
Not to be denied, the Bucs marched 70 yards in 14 plays to score on a five-yard touchdown run by Justin Jordan to hand the Grizzlies their first loss since 2006.
Next up for Blinn is Abilene Christian’s junior varsity in Abilene on Sept. 8.
