Frequently Asked Questions
Bryan Campus - Becoming Better Writers

What kind of help can I get in L257/L249?
If you are a READ, STDY, or ENGL 0320, 0321 student, you can come in for tutoring during open hours.  Our tutors can help you with your assignments.  They will not do your work for you, but they will help you understand the skills and concepts that your assignments are calling for and developing.

What are the lab's open hours?

How do I save my work?
You will need a 3.5" PC/IBM compatible disk to save any work that you do in the lab.  The computers have a security program that prevents users from saving anything to the hard drive.  It is always a good idea to have more than one copy of your work.  If you do not have a computer at home, a second floppy disk will do the trick.

How do I save my work to two different disks?
If you want to save your work to two separate floppy disks, you need to select (highlight) all of your text, copy it, and close the document you are working on while the original disk stays in the floppy drive.  Wait for the disk drive light to go out, then remove the original disk and place the second disk in the drive.  Create a new document--either by clicking on the blank page on the tool bar or by using the file menu--and paste the text that you copied.  Save the text as you normally would.  Remember to exit the program entirely before removing your disk or you will get the blue screen of death.

What if I use different software at home?
If you use a version of Microsoft Word other than Word 2000, or if you use WordPerfect, Microsoft Works, or Apple Works, you will need to save your word processing documents as Rich Text Files (.rtf).  (If you are using a a late model Macintosh, save your work as rtf to a PC formatted disk.)  Saving your work as rtf enables you to open your documents with almost any word processing program.

Can I check my email from the lab?
Yes, provided that you use a web-based email account like Yahoo! or Hotmail.

How do I get a web-based email account?
Click here and follow the instructions.
