Deep Pools

You will find larger fishes such as gar and spotted bass in the deeper portions of the river.

Many fish like to hide among submerged tree branches making seining for them difficult. In these areas you can find channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and large numbers of sunfish and minnows.

Longear sunfish (Lepomis megalotis) are easy to recognize by the extremely long flap coming off of their operculum or gill covering.

You can also find live mussels such as this three ridge mussel.

Most mussels are endangered or threatened and it is best not to disturb them.

This specimen was photographed during a survey for the Texas Mussel Watch program.
