The Writing Center Staff

The Writing Center staff is dedicated to providing excellent tutorial services to Blinn students. The writing consultants are professional tutors with writing backgrounds. In addition to tutoring students, writing consultants assist instructors in the Parallel Studies labs, give presentations to classes, lead orientation sessions, present student workshops, and develop handouts, worksheets, and writing materials for students. Writing consultants also complete many hours of training and exceed all training requirements established by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), which certifies the Writing Center.

Monica Byrne

Monica has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Arts degree in Education from Texas A&M University. She is certified to teach English Language Arts and Reading in grades 8-12. Monica taught first-year English for three years at Texas A&M as a graduate teaching assistant. She enjoys helping students become better writers.

Bethany Douglass

Bethany earned her B.A. degree in English literature and technical writing at the University of North Texas. She previously tutored in the Blinn Writing Center from 2007 to 2010 and is an Advanced Level tutor. She is also certified as a Teaching Writing Structure and Style tutor by the Institute for Excellence in Writing. In addition to tutoring in the Writing Center, Bethany tutors students in writing and grammar at Classical Conversations of Bryan/College Station.

Eric Ellsworth

Eric earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from UT Pan-America, where he majored in English and Political Science. Eric is a certified English teacher and is currently teaching at Lamar Alternative High School. He enjoys helping Blinn students make their essays stronger.

Linda Sturm-Flores

Linda received her Master of Science degree in Agronomy from Texas A&M University. Her tutoring experience includes tutoring students at Bryan High School in a variety of subjects. She enjoys helping students with their writing both in the Writing Center and in the Parallel Studies labs. Linda joined the Writing Center staff in October of 2012.

Patricia Henschen

Patricia earned her B.A. degree in International Studies and Spanish at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. She received her M.A. degree in Literature/Writing/Women’s Studies at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Patricia has taught and tutored at the college level, and she also has worked as a software engineer and technical writer.

Nicole Jennings

Nicole completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Liberty University, majoring in Spanish and Teaching English as a Second Language. Before moving to Texas, Nicole was a language instructor for the O’Neill Language Academy in her native Minnesota. She loves learning and exploring language, and she enjoys helping Blinn students improve and enjoy their writing.

A.J. Lambert

A.J. earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education at Colorado State University, where she also worked as an office assistant in the Resident Life program. A.J. was a substitute teacher in the Weld County RE-6 School District in Greeley, Colorado.

Nicole Perkins

Nicole is currently a READ 0305 and 0306 instructor at Blinn College. She graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in English (creative writing) and a minor in film. She earned her Masters in Education degree from Texas A&M and is certified to teach Reading and English Language Arts in grades 8-12. She has also taught at the high school level. Nicole loves facilitating student learning and engaging students both in the classroom and in the Writing Center.

Emily Posey

Emily earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and creative writing from Texas A&M. In addition to her retail experience, Emily has extensive familiarity with Microsoft Office and internet navigation and research. She enjoys the challenges and rewards of tutoring in a busy college environment.

Marty Reed

Marty is a certified English teacher with 13 years of classroom teaching experience. She also has 10 years of experience working as a dyslexia specialist/academic therapist. Marty has worked in both the Writing Center and the Parallel Studies labs since the fall of 2005. She is a mom of four and a grandmother. She enjoys working with Blinn students and seeing the improvement in their reading and writing skills.

Sharon Roe

Sharon earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature at Austin College. She served as a Developmental English and GED instructor at Grayson County College from 1996 to 2003. In addition to her teaching experience, Sharon launched and administered two Conversational English schools in Japan. She enjoys writing and working with students in the Writing Center.

Bonnie Schroeder

Bonnie graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in teaching and a minor in history. She has 32 years of experience teaching in Texas public schools. Bonnie states, “I so love working with reading and writing students. It is very gratifying to watch students obtain knowledge, apply newly acquired skills, and achieve success.”

Janalisa Soltis

Janalisa graduated from Texas A&M with a B.B.A. degree in Marketing. She has enjoyed editing for the Texas Transportation Institute, and she currently serves as a freelance writer for the local magazine, Flair. She has also served as a substitute teacher in the College Station public schools. She is married and the proud mom of four children. Janalisa enjoys being part of those “ah ha” moments with students as they discover their talents as writers.

Elizabeth Webb

Elizabeth completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at Texas A&M. She has experience tutoring ESL students. Her ESL work has included working with Korean students and practicing conversational English, teaching grammar, and editing papers. She has also served as a tutor and mentor at Bryan Collegiate High School, where she also helped students apply to colleges and prepare scholarship applications.

Shannon Williford

Shannon earned her B.A. degree at Stephen F. Austin University. She has experience in teaching at the high school and middle school levels, as well as being a GED instructor in the Brenham Independent School District. Shannon is also a program aide and admissions reviewer at Texas A&M.

Kurt Wilson

Kurt graduated from the University of Texas with a major in the Plan II program. He worked many years for book publishers such as Little, Brown and Harcourt Brace. His humor column, “Lawrence of Suburbia,” was distributed to newspapers all over North America by Knight-Ridder/Tribune wire service. At present Kurt is co-owner and editor of a quarterly magazine, The Round Top Register. Kurt was a writing tutor in Northern California before returning to his native Texas.

Dr. Richard Williamson, Director

Dr. Williamson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Journalism, and French and his Master of Arts degree in English at Sam Houston State University. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of North Texas, with an emphasis on American literature and the writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Before arriving at Blinn College, he taught English and coordinated the Writing Center at Muskingum University in Ohio. In addition to directing the Writing Center, he teaches English classes at Blinn.
