About The Writing Center

The Writing Center provides one-on-one tutoring for students in Humanities and Developmental courses at Blinn College. The Writing Center is nationally accredited with the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), and all tutors are professional tutors.

The Writing Center provides a relaxed environment in which students can feel comfortable asking questions and working on their writing. During a tutoring session students choose what aspects of their assignments they would like to work on, and tutors help students identify their writing concerns and address them. While the Writing Center is not an editing service, we will work with writers during any stage of the writing process: understanding an assignment, choosing a topic, brainstorming, planning, revising, editing, and documenting sources.

What do we do?

The Writing Center helps you learn about writing so you can:

  • Feel confident in your abilities
  • Avoid repeating the same mistakes
  • Get the most out of your classes
  • Work toward your career goals
  • Avoid staying up all night the night before an assignment is due!
Mission

The mission of the Writing Center is to help students become better writers. We believe that writing is an ongoing process and that all students have the potential to communicate effectively through writing. The tutors strive to help students learn, not just make a better grade on an assignment.

Who can use The Writing Center?

Students enrolled in all Humanities and Developmental courses may use the Writing Center during regular hours.

* What if I am in English 0320/0321? On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, A119 will also offer help with developmental reading and writing homework assignments.

* What if I am not in a Humanities course or need help writing something that is not related to a class? You may use the Learning Center, or come to the Writing Center as a walk-in (only Humanities and Developmental students may make appointments).

Location

We are located in the Administration building room A119 on the Bryan campus (see map). When you walk in, go straight back and look for our sign. You can't miss it!

How it Works

Students sit down with a tutor for up to 45 minutes. The session focuses on one area of the writing process where students have specific questions. The tutors guide students through the writing process and help them locate answers in textbooks and other resources.

To use The Writing Center, students may make an appointment or just walk in. To make an appointment, students should come to A119 and schedule a time in the appointment calendar, call 979-209-7591 and request one. Students may also stop by The Writing Center without an appointment; however, those students with appointments are seen first.

Appointments are strongly recommended. Think of it this way: if every 1301 or 1302 student has a paper due on the same day, then walk ins are probably in for a really long wait! Students can make up to two appointments per week.

What to Bring

- Your notes/outline and/or two typed copies of your draft
- The assignment description or prompt
- Any related textbooks or other materials
- Specific questions about your writing!
