Bell, Moreno named Louisville Slugger/NFCA NJCAA All-Americans

Blinn College pitcher Tara Bell and utility player Jamie Moreno were named All-Americans by the National Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association, both making the 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA NJCAA Division I All-America Second Team.

Bell, a freshman from Baytown, garnered every pitching post-season honor available this year as she led the Bucs to a 45-11 record, the Region XIV title, and a second consecutive appearance at the NJCAA Division I Softball Championship Tournament. Bell (27-2) was recently honored as the Region XIV Most Valuable Player for the season, was selected to the All-Region First Team, the South Zone All-Conference First Team, and named to the NJCAA All-American Third Team. A topnotch student, Bell made it on the honor roll both semesters at Blinn, earning a 4.0 GPA in the fall.

Moreno, a freshman from Richmond, Texas, and one of Blinn’s top hitters was also placed on the All-American Second Team and earned All-Conference Second Team honors in May. A versatile, but very accurate player, Moreno played well in every outfield position and started in 52 of the 56 games Blinn played this season. Moreno finished with a .354 batting average. She was also a top performer in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA in both the fall and spring semesters.

The Bucs finished 45-11 for the season.

Blinn softball coaches earn regional honor

Rich ChurchThe National Fastpitch Coaches Association named Blinn College head coach Rick Church and assistant coach Jami Ingram as the 2010 Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year. This is the second year for the duo to be honored with the title.

Church, who is in his 11th year at Blinn, is the all-time winningest coach, with more than 500 victories at the college.

The Lady Bucs have been to the national tournament four times in seven years and finished 2010 with a 45-11 record. Blinn had two players, pitcher Tara Bell and infielder Brittany Arredondo, named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-American third team last week.

The 2010 NFCA NJCAA Division I National Coaching Staff of the Year will be announced June 17, with the regional winners being the three finalists for the award. http://www.nfca.org/news/?id=3459

Blinn Lady Bucs receive NJCAA All-American recognition

Blinn College pitcher Tara Bell and infielder Brittany Arredondo have been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-American third team.

This season, Bell, a freshman from Baytown, garnered every post-season pitching honor available as she led the Bucs to a 45-11 record, the Region XIV title, and a second consecutive appearance at the NJCAA Division I Softball Championship Tournament. Bell (27-2) was recently honored as the Region XIV Most Valuable Player for the season and also selected to the All-Region First Team and the South Zone All-Conference First Team.

Arredondo, a freshman from Canyon Lake, Texas, and one of Blinn’s top hitters was also placed on the All-Region and All-Conference First Teams. A dedicated player, Arredondo started and played in all 56 games this season and finished with a .420 batting average.

“Both Tara and Brittany were well-deserving for All-American recognition,” Blinn head coach Rich Church said. “Their consistent performance over the course of the season helped us achieve a repeat Region 14 Championship and return trip to the National Tournament.”

The Bucs finished 45-11 for the season.

Buc Softball goes 1-1 during first day of National Tournament

After taking the opening contest in extra innings, the Buc softball team mounted a rally in the seventh inning with three runs, but fell short and were defeated 5-3 by Miami-Dade.

Held in check by Miami-Dade pitching for six innings, the Buccaneers began chipping away at a 5-0 deficit with a string of hits and three runs in the bottom half of the last inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Bucs grounded into a double play and followed with another groundout with runners in scoring position for the third out.

Blinn now moves to the losers bracket and will face Wallace at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Blinn Softball dominates regional and conference honor

Blinn College pitcher Tara Bell garnered every post-season honor available as she led the Bucs to a 44-9 record, the Region XIV title, and a second consecutive appearance at the NJCAA Division I Softball Championship Tournament. Bell (27-2) was honored as the Region XIV Most Valuable Player for the season and also selected to the All-Region First Team and the South Zone All-Conference First Team.

The Bucs dominated in the awards with infielders Brittany Arredondo and Britni Wells joining outfielder Michelle Downing on the All-Region and All-Conference First Teams. All-Conference First Team honors also went to catcher Courtney Cox, infielder Sara Vaughn, and outfielder Ariel Gomez. Vaughn and Cox made the All-Region Second Team. Outfielder Alex Yarbrough and utility player Jamie Moreno were named to the All-Conference Second Team.

The Bucs will play in the national tournament in St. George, UT, May 20-22. Tournament seeding will be announced next week. It will be the Bucs’ fourth appearance. In 2009, Blinn finished fourth with a record of 56-11. Their highest finish came in 2003 as the national champion runner-up. Blinn sweeps Region XIV; heads to national softball tournament for second straight year 

The Blinn College softball team earned a second consecutive Region XIV title with an 8-4 win over Navarro College to advance to the national tournament. The Bucs (44-9) entered the regional competition ranked No. 10 nationally. They swept the tournament with wins over Alvin and Paris, and twice defeated No. 5 Navarro.

In the championship game, Alex Yarbrough, Valarie Colunga, Brittany Arredondo, and Courtney Cox all batted in runs. Ace freshman pitcher Tara Bell improved to 27-2 with Alyssa Vordenbaum getting the save.

The NJCAA Division I Softball Championship Tournament will be held in St. George, UT, May 20-22. The Bucs will make their fourth appearance at the tournament. Their highest finish came in 2003 as the national champion runner-up. In 2009, Blinn finished fourth with a record of 56-11.

Saturday victory was 500th for Blinn College’s Church

The Blinn College softball team’s 9-0 victory over Paris at the Region 14 Crossover in Longview, Texas Saturday was coach Rick Church’s 500th career victory.

Church, who is in his 11th year at Blinn, led the Lady Buccaneers to a fourth-place finish at last season’s national tournament and is now 503-226 for his career.

Blinn hosts Angelina for a 2 p.m. double-header today at Hohlt Park.

As a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association, the Buccaneers compete in the Region XIV Athletic Conference and the Southwest Junior College Football Conference. In 1995 and 1996, Blinn College made history by becoming the first college to win back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association football championships with 24 consecutive wins. Blinn added a third national title in 2006 following a perfect 12-0 season. The Buccaneers compete in football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball. Complementing the athletic teams are the Blinn Cheerleaders, the Buccaneer Treasures Dance Team and the Blinn College Marching Band. All athletic teams are located on the Brenham campus.
