Buccaneers eliminated from national tournament, finish 4th

After an remarkable run of four wins in yesterday’s tournament action, the Blinn Buccaneers season came to an end today, falling to No. 5 Tallahassee College 8-6 at the 2011 NJCAA Division I Women’s Fastpitch National Championship tournament at the Canyons Complex in St. George, UT.

Tallahassee set the tone of the game early on, leading off the first, third and fourth innings with solo home runs.  A four run fourth inning would then give Tallahassee a commanding 8-2 lead at the mid-way point.

After scoring two runs in the first on RBI singles by Alex Yarbrough (SO, Boerne) and Michelle Downing (SO, Clements), the Bucs were held scoreless until the fifth, scoring one run on a RBI single by Nicole Mack (SO, Lake Jackson).  The Bucs then cut the lead to two on a three run blast by Yarbrough in the sixth.  The Bucs attempted another come-from-behind rally in the seventh, but stranded two runners, ending the season and their hopes for the school’s first national championship.

Blinn (55-8) finishes the tournament with a 4-2 record and a 4th place overall finish in the national tournament.

Today’s contest marked the final game as Buccaneers for sophomores Downing, Mack, Yarbrough, Brittany Arredondo (Canyon Lake), Alyssa Vordenbaum (Pasadena), Ariel Gomez (Sealy), Tara Bell (Baytown), Sara Vaughn (Huntsville), Jalyn Erwin (Sweeny) and Lindsey Marik (El Campo).

Blinn Softball Ranked Eighth in NJCAA Preseason Poll

For the third consecutive season, and for the fifth time in the past eight years, the Blinn Buccaneer softball team will open the regular season ranked in the Top 10 of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) preseason poll.

Blinn begins the 2011 season ranked No. 8 in the nation and is the lone Region XIV team in the preseason Top 20.

The Buccaneers are coming off another record-setting season in which they finished 45-11 and earned the program’s fourth trip to the NJCAA National Tournament.

Head coach Rick Church enters his 12th season at Blinn as the college’s all-time winningest coach, with 461 victories. His overall college coaching record stands at 535-234 (.696), and he has led the Buccaneers to 10 Region XIV Tournament appearances, including four conference and regional championships (2003, 2006, 2009, 2010). C urch has twice been named Region XIV Coach of the Year (2003, 2009), and was also awarded the Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year in 2003, 2004, 2009 and 2010.

“We are appreciative of the respect given to our program in the preseason ranking, but the real work starts on Feb. 4,” Church said. “We now have to prepare and compete every week to make sure we are a top 10 team at the end of the season.”

The Buccaneers will field an experienced team in 2011, as they return 10 starters from last season’s national tournament team, including NJCAA All-Americans Tara Bell (P/1B, Baytown) and Brittany Arredondo (SS/UT, Smithson Valley).

“We have 10 returners with considerable innings played last season, which should be a real competitive advantage for us this year,” Church added. “Likewise, the addition of freshman pitchers Kaci Federwisch of Brenham and Jocelyn Tacquard of Santa Fe will bring quality and depth to our pitching staff.”

The 2011 season opens on the road Feb. 4 in Galveston at the Whitecap Invitational. The Bucs first home game of the season will be the Blinn College Round Robin at Hohlt Park in Brenham on Feb. 11, as they face Temple College at 1:00 p.m., followed by No. 18 Seminole State College at 3:00 p.m.
