This
course is part of the Texas Art Curricula for all Fine Art
majors. It addresses the needs of all Studio Art, Graphic Design
and Art Education majors for a basic or beginning drawing course.
Some colleges and universities will accept it for the core
component course in Fine Arts in both Associate in Arts Degree
and the Associate in Science Degree.
ARTS courses
are listed in compliance with the Texas Higher Education
Coordinating Board Common Course Numbering System to assure
ease of identification and transferability to Texas universities
and colleges.
Course
Description:
An
introduction to a variety of media, techniques and aesthetic
considerations for exploring descriptive and expressive possibilities
in drawing, with consideration of an understanding of natural
form, and the expressive and creative handling of the visual
art elements.
Objectives
and Student Learning Outcomes:
- Develop
the ability to see and translate real forms
onto the two-dimensional space, to accurately depict
forms and objects in a variety of wet and dry media (develop
sensory perception and eye-hand coordination.)
- Learn
about drawing materials
- Explore
and apply the use of the visual elements to understand
the principles of pictorial organization: line (marks,)
shape, space, value, texture, plane, volume and scale,
in relation to content and design.
- Learn
various different approaches that help develop draftsmanship,
including one and two point perspective.
- Visualize
forms: imagine forms that express concepts or ideas,
and render them visible.
- Symbolize
ideas: learn to use drawing tools as an alternative mode
of communication, interpretation and expression.
- Present
ideas orally: develop the ability to describe and analyze
drawings using adquate language, in relation to art historical
and contemporary practices.
- Execute
a variety of drawing, with different intentions, in and
out of the studio.
- Explore
the self; utilize drawing as a subjective interpretation
of the world.
- Think
critically about visual works and express these thoughts
in words: describe, interpret, reflect, compare and assess
one's own drawings, and other student's drawings during
class critiques.
Course
Requirements:
- Attend
workshop presentations by faculty (2 hrs/week,) introducing
historical and contemporary techniques and aesthetic
concerns; criteria for making value judgements regarding
drawing media; to promote student's abilitites to talk
comfortably about art and art concepts, using correct
terminology.
- Participate
in required studio hours (4 hrs/week,) following directions
to produce class exercises, reading, and outside of class
assignments in sketch book or larger format, as required
(3 hrs./week).
- Proper
completion and storage of works, organization of portfolio,
including written observations, as needed for class critiques
and portfolio assessment (mid-term and final portfolio.)
- Acquisition
of adequate vocabulary through class attendance and book
readings, as well as art journals, to discuss work during
critiques.
- Select
and matt best work on paper for exhibition in studio
at the end of the semester.
- Come
to studio on time to listen to explanation/demonstration.
- Bring
all needed supplies.
- Contribute
to studio maintenance.
- Be
persistent and complete all assignments to the best of
your abilities, meeting or exceeding teacher's expectations.
Evaluation:
Your
work will evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Work
ethics (dedication, attitude, commitment to excellence,
punctuality) 20 pts.
- Mid-term
portfolio work: 20 pts.
- Participation
in class critiques: 10 pts.
- Final
exam on terminology: 10 pts.
- Final
Portfolio: 40 pts. (includes oral participation in critique)

100 pts.
